ABrief IntroductionJurisprudence is a general term that describes various scientific activities and their cognitive achievements,which take“Fali"as the central theme and research object. The discipline of jurisprudence is the basic theory,general theory,methodology and the ideologies oflaw.As an important part of the modern legal education system,jurisprudence is the core course for college and university students majored in law. This textbook was among “The2lst Century Series", launched and organized by the Ministry of Education(MOE)of China. It was awarded thefirst prize of the National Excellent Textbooks of Higher Eduction Institutions in 2002. In 2003, this texthook wasincluded into“Texthook Construction Plan for 100 Higher Education Classic Courses"of the Higher EducationPress, while Jurisprudence, a course offered by Jilin University and using this textbook, was recognized as thefirstnational classic courses by the MOE at the same year.In 2007, this textbook was recognized as"Classic Textbooksfor Ordinary Higher Education"by MOE. Based on the academic and disciplinary orientation of jurisprudence,this textbook incorporates the history of law, the system of legal science, and legal education.It also uncoversthe ontology and thelogic of law based on basic concepts of jurisprudence,such as law,right, obligation,legalsystem,legal element, legal act, legal relation, legal liability,and, in particular, the twin concepts of right andobligation.It further comprehensively expounds the origins and evolution of law, the formulation and implementationof law, the professions of law, the methods of law, legal procedure, the values of law, the rule of law, and socialand economic development. Finally, it systematically discusses the critical and frontier issues related to the statepolicies of ruling the country according to law and building China under the rule of law in an all-round way from boththeoretical andpractical perspectives.The 5th edition of this textbook fully embodies Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristicsfor a New Era, the theoretical innovations of socialism legal theories with Chinese characteristics since the 18thNational Congress of the Communist Party of China. It absorbs the latest achievements of jurisprudence researchand teaching at home and abroad since the publication of the 4th edition.
