acquisition, second language acquisition, language and mind etc. The major parts of this course are the chapters about language studies proper, and the difficult parts might be the abstract concepts, definitions, principles and theories in each chapter. The students will be required to preview the relevant chapters each time before going into the classroom, to raise and post onto the course Wechat group or other learning platform at least one in-depth question concerning the chapter to be covered on the basis of their observation of the daily language use (either from English, other second languages, or Chinese) ; and they are encouraged to participate in the classroom discussion in a variety of ways: asking for elaboration, doubting the current theories or principles, analyzing the facts about daily language use with the theories or principles at issue; the third task each of the student has to accomplish is to select from Chapters concerning language change, language and society, language and culture a topic which interests them to conduct a 10-minute presentation while attending classes after the branches of linguistics have been introduced. After taking the course, the students will get familiar with the basic theories, principles in linguistics, further their understanding of human languages and cultures, enhance their scientific awareness in linguistic studies, improve their scientific literacy, strengthen critical thinking skills and make their daily language use more effectively.
