Unit 4 Making the news Reading MY FIRST WORK ASSIGNMENT Unforgettable, "says new reporter Never will Zhou Yang(ZY)forget his first assignment at the office of China Daily. His discussion with his new boss, Hu Xin(HX), was to strongly influence his life as a reporter HX: Welcome, We are so glad you are coming to work with us. Your first job at China Daily will be as a reporter. Do you have any questions ZY: Can I go out on a story immediately? HX: (laughing) Not on your own! Not till you are more experienced! The first time we'll send you with an experienced reporter. Only when you have seen what he or she does, can you cover a story yourself Z: Wonderful! I'm so excited. What do I need to take with me? I already have a notebook and pen. I also brought my camera with me. HX: No need for a camera! You'll have a professional photographer with you to take photographs. You'll find your colleagues very eager to assist you and if you are interested in photography, it may be possible for you to concentrate on that later on Z: Thank you. Not only am I interested in photography, but I took a course at university, so it's actually of special interest to me HX: Good ZY: What do I need to remember when I go out to cover a story HX: You need to be curious. Only if you ask many different questions will you acquire all the information you need to know. We say a good reporter must have a"nose"for a story. That means 段裟 he or she must be able to tell when people are not telling the whole truth and try to discover it. They must use research or ask other people to find out the missing parts of the story. ZY: I see What mistakes must I avoid? HX: Here comes my list of"dos"and"don'ts: don't be rude, don t talk too much yourself, and make sure you listen to the answers carefully A: Why is listening so HX: Well, you have to listen to the detailed facts. Meanwhile you have to prepare the next question de pending on what the person says Z: But how can I listen to answers if I have to write down what he or she is saying? HX: This is a trick of the trade. If the person being interviewed agrees, we sometimes use small recorders to make sure that we get all our facts straight. It is also useful if a person wants to challenge us. We have the evidence to support our story 26
Unit 4 Making the news Z: I can see how important that is! Have you ever had a case where somebody accused your reporters of getting the wrong end of the stick? HX: Yes, but it was a long time ago. He admitted that he knew the man who was supposed to have bribed him, but denied that he had ever taken any money. We arranged an interview between that man and the footballer and when we saw them together we guessed from the footballers body language that he was not telling the truth. An article was written which suggested he was guilty. He was very angry and tried to stop us publishing it. Later we were proved right ZY: That was a real""scoop". I,'m looking forward to my first assignment as a reporter. Perhaps I too will get a scoop HX: Perhaps you will. You never know!
