Etiology Syphilis is caused by infection of Treponema pallidum By dark-field microscopy, the characteristic motility of the pathogen can be observed, which consists of three movements a projection in the direction of the long axis a rotation on its long axis a twisting from side to side Treponema is not easy to survive in vitro. Boil, dry, soapsuds or common antiseptic can kill the pathogen
