Drawing Drapery The Clothed Figure Chapter Four:The Seven Basic Folds Pipe Fold Every fold has a point of origin. In Chapter One we discussed how a fold originates as it leaves the surface of the form underlying it. This point of origin is also a point of tension. Our first fold is characterized by having only one point of origin and is referred to as a "pipe"fold, since the cross section of the fold resembles a pipe.In Illustration No.8,each of the folds starts at the waist, having only one point of origin, and falls freely, creating the round pipe configuration.Illustration No.9 is a diagram of the pipe fold.In the flowing Illustration No.8 lines of Illustration No.10 we see simple ex amples of the pipe fold used in sculpture. Drawing Drapery The Clothed Figure The drawings on this page, though having the appearance of cartoon characters, were Illustration No.11 actually drawn from life as instructional examples for animation use.In studying Illustration No.11,notice how the figure was first conceived.as a series of simple forms.Illustration No.12 was approached in the same manner. Illustration No.12 Page 9
Drawing Drapery The Clothed Figure Notice how these standing figures seems to be in motion. The sense of movement is achieved by having the drapery flow rather than copying it hanging straight down as in the posed model. This series of drawings and sculpture all show simple examples of the pipe fold in movement. Drawing Drapery The Clothed Figure Diaper Fold lllustration No.13. The next fold is characterized by having two points of origin. It is called the diaper fold because it has the look of a diaper hanging on a clothes line.Illustration No 13 clearly shows the basic configuration. Illustration No.14 shows the effect of gravity upon the center of the fold as one side is shifted higher than the other. Illustration No.14 Page 11
Drawing Drapery The Clothed Figure Illustration No.15 Illustration No.15 above and the sculpture show both the pipe and diaper folds.Notice how the folds go over the form.We have a clear understanding of the volume of the legs, waist, and even the arm as the drapery goes behind and over it. Page12
