Roderick MacKinnon Born 1956(47 years).Grew up in Burlington outside Boston, USA.B.A.at Brandeis University,Boston,1978.M.D.at Tufts Medical School in Boston,1982.Since 1996,Professor of Molecular Neurobiology and Biophysics at The Rockefeller University in New York.Roderick MacKinnon studies the principles of electricity in biology through analysis of ion channel structure and function.Ion channels catalyze the diffusion of inorganic ions down their electrochemical gradients across cell membranes.Because the ionic movements are passive, ion channels would seem to be extraordinarily simple physical systems, and yet they are responsible for all electrical signaling in biology.Among their many functions, ion channels control the pace of the heart, regulate the secretion of hormones into the bloodstream, and generate the electrical impulses underlying information transfer in the nervous system. My research is aimed at understanding the physical and chemical principles underlying ion channel function.
