Introduction • Bridges are the most critical structures in a road network • You can still drive over a failed road • You cannot drive over a failed bridge. Consequences of a failed bridge are much higher than those of a failed road • Bridges are designed with high safety factors • Roads are designed with much lower safety factors • Roads and bridges are completely different structures and therefore need completely different materials August 31, 2025 5
