When my friends Ted and Mary were about to get married, I gave them some advice. “If you want to have a happy marriage,” I said, “the most important thing is to learn how to compromise. Whenever you have different opinions about things, each of you must give way a little. Find a middle course that’ll keep you both happy.” When they were planning their first holiday, Ted wanted to do something active, but Mary just wanted to relax in the sun. They compromised by choosing a hotel in the mountains. Every day Mary would lie by the swimming pool while Ted went off for long walks. Then they would spend the evenings together. They compromised and they were very happy. When Ted and Mary had a baby, they disagreed about what to name it. Ted wanted to call their son Robert because of a tradition in his family. But Mary wanted a name that would help the boy to be seen as an individual. She wanted to call him Lawrence. This looked like a real problem as there seemed to be no way for them to compromise. Mary asked her friends and family for advice. Everyone had a suggestion, but none seemed to offer a solution. So I told Mary the story of my own name. My parents each wanted to name me after their own father. One was named George and the other was named Albert. They compromised by naming me after both of them. That’s how Ted and Mary managed to solve their problem. Their son is named Robert William Lawrence, and they call him Lawrence. Pre-Reading Activities
