1.3.Definition of Statistical Learning Statistical learning is about using computer to build models based on data, and use them to predict and analyze data. Statistical learning is also called as statistical machine learning. To extract important patterns and trends, and understand"what the data says."We call this learning from data. This lecture focuses on the pattern recognition based on statistical learning, or simply Statistical Pattern Recognition(PR) 17/68

1.4.Definition of Pattern Observable things that exist in time and space can be called patterns,if we can distinguish whether they are the same or not.The pattern is not the thing itself, but the information we get from it. Pattern:The information obtained from observation of specific individual objects with temporal and spatial distribution. Pattern class:The population(whole)of the same pattern.Referred to as the pattern. Sample:Short for specific pattern. 19/68

Features of Statistical Pattern Recognition (PR) (1)Platform:computer and its network. (2)Research object:data. It is data-driven.Data includes text, image, speech, and video. (3)Goal:to analyze and predict the data. (4)Core:the algorithm. The algorithm constructs a model and uses the model for analysis and prediction. (5)An interdisciplinary subject:probability, statics, information theory, computation theory, optimization theory, and computer science. 20/68
