The Structure of Heart The wall of the heart comprises three layers, named from within outwards endocardium, myocardium and epicardium. The endocardium is a thin, smooth, glistening membrane which lines the chambers of the heart, and is continuous with the lining of the large blood vessels. The valves are formed by duplications of the lining endocardium of the heart, strengthened by intervening layer of fibrous tissue. The myocardium consists of the ordinary cardiac muscle and specially differentiated cardiac muscle(the conduction system). The epicardium is the visceral layer of the serous pericardium. It consists of a layer of the mesothelium and a delicate layer of connective tissue

The Conduction of Heart It consists of specially differentiated cardiac muscle. Function:It is responsible for initiating and maintaining the normal cardiac rhythm and ensures the proper coordination of the atrial and ventricular contractions. Composition:It comprises the sinoatrial node, internodal bundle, the atrioventricular nodal region, the atrioventricular bundle and its two branches together with the subendocardial plexuses of Purkinje fibers
