The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 1950 "for their discoveries relating to the hormones of the adrenal cortex,their structure and biological effects" In 1849 Thomas Addison of Scotland in 1849 discovered the connection between the adrenal glands and Addison's disease.In 1894,an English physician raised his own son's blood pressure by means of watery extracts from adrenla glands.During the early 1930's,Edward C.Kendall successfully isolated 5 different compounds from the adrenal cortex.In 1936,Thadeus Reichstein Edward Calvin Philip Showalter isolated as many as 7 substances.On April Kendall Hench 29,1948,Kendall produced a few grams of compound E.Philip S.Hench joined with Kendall at this point,and together they discovered that compound E could be successfully used to treat patients with rheumatoid arthritis.The wonder drug had finally arrived and it was christened Cortisone "cortisone"on July 1,1949.In 1950,Kendall, (A-pregnene-17c,21-diol-3,11,20-trione) Reichstein and Hench were awarded the Nobel Prize
