DTC: derivational theory of complexity DTC(cf p. 39) The view that the distance between surface and deep structure(as measured by the number of transformations in a sentence's derivation) is an accurate index of the psychological complexity of the sentence. E A. The boy was bitten B. The boy was bitten by the wolf. Sentence a requires a transformation that deletes the phrase by the wolf, so DTC would predict that it would be more difficult to comprehend Sentence A than sentence B ◆Home
