On the planet Venus, a much stronger greenhouse effect is responsible for temperatures of almost 900 degrees Fahrenheit! Pre-reading Activities: Listening Is the earth getting warmer? Have the effects of industry and pollution created a “greenhouse effect” that will alter the climate of the earth? This is a major question facing scientists today. Let’s look at some of the factors involved. As cars and factories burn coal, oil, and gasoline, they release a chemical compound known as carbon dioxide, or CO2, into the air. In recent decades, carbon dioxide levels in the earth’s atmosphere have built up to higher and higher levels. This buildup of CO2 prevents the heat of the earth from escaping out of our atmosphere. This is what scientists mean by the term “greenhouse effect.” In the same way that a building with glass walls can keep temperatures warm inside to grow plants, the extra “Blanket” of carbon dioxide keeps the earth’s heat in and warms our atmosphere. But instead of protecting us, this extra heat could cause terrible damage by upsetting the delicate balance of the earth’s ecology. Rising temperatures would change global rainfall patterns. Today’s farmlands would turn into deserts. And places that are now deserts would become lakes. Huge blocks of ice in the mountains and at the poles could melt, causing the seas to rise and creating floods in many places. On the planet Venus, a much stronger greenhouse effect is responsible for temperatures of almost 900 degrees Fahrenheit! It is not yet clear how strong the greenhouse effect on earth will become, but most scientists agree that it is a serious problem. In order to protect the earth, we must address this problem at once by reducing pollution, observing weather patterns, and carefully watching the thermometer

Intensive Study 2 Scientists issued reports on the severe climate changes that could result from the"greenhouse effect-the gradual warming of the atmosphere caused by an increase in carbon dioxide levels from the burning of fossil fuels, saying that average global temperatures could start to rise within a few decades and reach levels nine degrees fahrenheit higher than todays temperatures by the end of the next century. This experts said, could create dangerous changes to global weather patterns. For instance, it could change annual amounts of rainfall, swell or dry up rivers, and raise the level of the seas

Intensive Study 3 While admitting that this forecast was somewhat uncertain, scientists warned against treating it as a cry of wolf. Although there is considerable debate over how severe the greenhouse effect will be, one thing seems certain: Carbon dioxide levels are on the rise
